Over the past few years, Governor Murphy has enacted laws to help electrify the transportation sector, the largest source of climate pollution in New Jersey. Emissions from cars and light-duty trucks also account for about 30% of certain emissions that contribute to the formation of ground-level ozone or “smog” during summer months. These pollutants hit overburdened communities especially hard.
Landmark legislation in 2020 was enacted to boost the use of plug-in electric vehicles (EVs) in New Jersey. The new law: created a rebate program for electric vehicle purchases; set ambitious goals for EV sales and installation of charging stations; and authorized the NJ BPU to create incentives for at-home EV chargers.
In 2021, the Municipal Land Use Law was amended to require municipalities to treat EV-ready parking spaces as a permitted accessory use in all zoning districts without a variance.
In Feb. 2023, Governor Murphy made a commitment to phase out the sale of gas-powered vehicles and move to 100% sales of zero emission vehicles by 2035.
Today there are numerous state and federal incentives for EV adoption by residents, businesses and municipalities.
To help municipalities move towards clean energy, ANJEC has developed an Electric Vehicle (EV) resource paper which can be downloaded HERE
